If an annual vaccination good for you dog or cat? The short answer is NO.

Pet vaccination began in the 1950's. There was no evidence made formal on how long a pet is immunized with specific vaccines. And - at the time - no one thought there was some risk with vaccines. This was done custom to do every year, "reinforcements" or new vaccines.

This practice was criticized publicly in the 1990's. Although there was (and is) without report adverse reactions, there was no evidence that vaccines were creating a lot of problems for pets ranging from mild to death.

In 1992, Dr. Ronald Schultz, a veterinary immunologist and professor at the University of Wisconsin published a paper with Dr. Phillips, co-author in the current veterinary therapy.

They said: "A practice that started many years ago and that lacks scientific validity or verification is annual vaccination. Almost without exception, there is no immunological requirement for annual re-vaccination. Immunity to viruses persists for years or for life the animal. "

Dr. Schultz has been one of the leading thinkers on the protocols of the vaccine.

Vaccines have a place, but are not exempt risk. While a veterinarian will probably only see an immediate response, adverse reactions may occur up to 45 days after receiving the vaccine. Often people do not associate the adverse reactions to vaccination.

Adverse reactions to vaccines

There are many adverse reactions ranging from mild and short-term to long-term diseases ceiling, chronic diseases and even death. Allergies, chronic skin problems, inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, pancreatitis, kidney failure, liver failure, arthritis, thyroid disease, epilepsy, convulsions, paralysis, autoimmune disease, cancer.

In addition, behavioral problems like aggressiveness, suspicion, anxiety, withdrawal, separation anxiety, excessive barking, destructive behavior, tail chewing.

In fact, the vaccination site tumors have become so common in cats (between the shoulder blades), which is now recommended for vaccination in the leg or tail back so it can be amputated if it becomes cancerous.

Current recommendations

Annual vaccinations are no longer the standard care.

The 27 veterinary schools in North America have updated their protocol as they have done:
- American Veterinary Medical Association
- American Animal Hospital Association
- World Association of Small Animal Veterinary
- Australia Veterinary Association

World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) vaccination guidelines recommend that the duration of immunity is 7 years or more, based on studies challenge and blood.

Dr. Ronald Schultz, an expert in immunology and a member of the WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines Group and American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Task Force, said that if a puppy is vaccinated for parvovirus, distemper virus and adenovirus "no reason to believe that the vaccinated animal has a maximum lifelong immunity. "

Vaccines are not risk free. The fact that annual vaccination was common for years, does not mean it is good thing. Current science says otherwise.
